Eine rezessive Mutation des Keratin-Gens KRT71 ist bei bestimmten Hunden für das Wachstum eines lockigen Fells verantwortlich. Die hier analysierte Variante, die als c^1 bezeichnet wird, findet sich beim Portugiesischen Wasserhund. Eine verwandte Variante, c^2, wurde beim Bichon Frise, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly-coated Retriever, Irish Terrier, Lagotto Romagnolo und Spanish Water Dog beobachtet.
Klinische Merkmale
Affected dogs have a curly-haired coat instead of wavy haired. Coats must be of sufficient length to curl in the first place.
Dogs carrying the additional mutations for long coat (FGF5) and furnishings (RSPO2) will have furnishings and long soft coats, rather than wiry ones. When dogs carry variants in both FGF5 and KRT71, long and curly coat is seen.
If all three mutations (KRT71, FG5 en RSPO2) are present, the phenotype is long and curly with furnishings.
